Mission and Vision

Swedish Customs has a mandate from the Swedish Parliament and Government to collect customs duties, VAT and other charges to secure the financing of the public sector and to contribute to a well-functioning society for citizens and enterprise. Swedish Customs is also responsible for monitoring and checking international traffic across the Swedish borders to ensure compliance with regulations for import and export.

Part of Swedish Customs' task is also to make it easier for Swedish companies and citizens to do business with countries outside the EU, and to make it more difficult for criminal individuals and organisations to smuggle illegal goods into the country.

The Government has formulated three primary tasks for Swedish Customs:

Correct revenue via simpler rules
One of the tasks of Swedish Customs is to make sure that customs duties, taxes and charges are collected in the right way at the right time. Swedish Customs must function efficiently, and make it easy for citizens and companies to act correctly.

Preventing and combating criminal activities
It is important to prevent goods that are harmful for the environment, health, and security from entering the country. Combating  large-scale and organised criminal activity must be a high priority for Swedish Customs. Work to this end will restrict access to narcotics in Sweden.

Citizens and companies have confidence in Swedish Customs
Swedish Customs must work in a way that makes citizens and companies feel confident with this public authority.

Vision and objectives

To set the stage for fulfilling the government´s mandate, Swedish Customs has decided on a vision which include six headline objectives.

Vision
The Swedish Customs uses efficient and modern working methods to facilitate what is legal and to prevent what is illegal.
Swedish Customs has set six long-term goals for collecting correct revenue, performing effective checks and providing high-quality service to citizens and trade. The bar has been set high, and this challenge will require major innovation and changes to working methods.

We achieve 100% results in

  • securing the revenue from duties, taxes and charges,
  • increasing the benefit to society,
  • providing a round-the-clock customs service.

We achieve results that mean that at least 80%

  • of the flow of goods is quality assured,
  • of identified criminal networks are eliminated,
  • of customers and members of the general public are satisfied with our work and feel that they have been treated properly.

Swedish Customs will work towards these objectives both in the short- and long terms by continually developing and strengthening the following areas:

Cooperation — Swedish Customs relies on cooperation to run an efficient and modern operation. Cooperation takes place both internally and externally with companies and other authorities both in Sweden and abroad. Internal cooperation is strengthened by a common focus for the Law Enforcement and the Managing the Trade processes.

Working methods — Swedish Customs continually works on developing its methods and improving IT support in order to meet the demands it faces.

Information — Information within Swedish Customs' realm of responsibility must be easy to find and to understand. Information must also be effectively disseminated and utilised within the authority itself.

Competence — Good leaders and skilled human resources are essential to the development of operations at Swedish Customs. Swedish Customs must work systematically and from a long-term perspective to strengthen its human resources development and meet future requirements and demands.
